MANTRAS OF THE BEDROOM

“To be loved means to be recognized as existing.”

- Thich Nhat Hanh

Experimental Short || Director & Editor || Completed || 6m 43s || 2018

Using the framework of Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh’s four mantras of love, Geneieve goes on a reflective journey all within the confines of her bedroom with those who enter it. Geneieve uses the mantras to unpack her relationship with a toxic lover, her caring friends, and herself. “Mantras of the Bedrooms” explores the idea of using sexual intimacy as a substitute of loving yourself. It demonstrates the idea that the four mantras of love do not need to always apply to a romantic relationship, but one of pure friendship or self-nurture.

Through symbolic and feminine-driven imagery, dream-like lighting, and detailed set-design, “Mantras of the Bedroom” takes an experimental approach on self-love and where we look for it.
